Engaged by his homeland’s political ferment, Buñuel made a similar move; he joined the Spanish Communist Party (PCE), an association he would maintain for nearly a decade and consequently deny for the rest of his life. Back in Paris, Buñuel found a job dubbing movies into Spanish at Paramount’s Joinville studio. Eventually promoted to head the unit, he kept himself busy when the Surrealists and PFC split, although, in a May 1932 letter to Breton, he came out as a red: “It is impossible today to maintain a ‘closed’ conception of poetry that is above class struggle.”
