Ottawa County study finds link between education, income and overall health
WEST OLIVE -- While Ottawa County gets high marks as one of Michigan’s healthiest counties, a new study finds low-income residents and those without insurance are having a tough time getting the care they need, and are more likely to be in poor health as a result.
A health needs assessment commissioned by a countywide task force connects the dots between the health of residents and their income and education levels. One out of five residents with a household income of $20,000 or less reported being in poor health, compared to 8 percent of all county residents, while 21 percent of those who failed to graduate from high school said their health was either fair or poor.
“There is a direct relationship between health outcomes and income and education,” said Marcia Knol, a community planner and analyst for the county Health Department. “Those with the lowest income and education generally have the poorest health outcomes.”
The countywide report followed a recent national survey by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation that ranked Ottawa as the second-healthiest county in Michigan.
