Canada is considering implementing a new policy that would allow for passports that do not reveal the holder’s gender.

It’s a well-meaning attempt to make life easier for intersex people whose gender is medically unclear and for people who live their lives as the opposite gender from their genitalia — in other words, people who are not having gender reassignment surgery, but whose appearance is going to cause border agents and airline personnel to do a serious double-take when compared with the gender listed on their passports.

There are worse things than the government trying to avoid discriminating against certain classes of citizens, but this is a case of creating big headaches to remedy one small segment of a problem that is already handled under current policy. Consider:

When the government recently beefed up transport security regulations by requiring airline personnel to give extra scrutiny to passenger identification, it recognized that there are many reasons for which people showing up at an airport gate might not look like the individuals portrayed in their passports.
