Reading man, 36, fatally shot on Mulberry Street

A Reading man was killed Sunday shortly before 3 a.m. when he was shot in the 1300 block of Mulberry Street.

Maximino J. Cruz, Jr., 36, was pronounced dead at the scene by Deputy Coroner Gretchen Weyandt at 3:48 a.m., officials said.

Sgt. John M. Solecki with the Reading police said Cruz was involved in a fight in the street at 2:45 a.m.

Cruz had been visiting someone in the 1300 block of Mulberry Street before getting into a confrontation outside, Solecki said. Multiple shots were fired and Solecki said there is evidence two guns were involved.

After being hit, Cruz ran a short distance before collapsing in an alleyway between two row homes, Solecki said. Investigators found his body in the breezeway where he fell.

Police are investigating the homicide and are conducting interviews of neighbors, but no charges have been filed.

Solecki said it is unclear if Cruz was armed. An autopsy is scheduled for 7:30 tonight.

Mulberry Overhang « Backyard and Beyond

, Native to Japan and Taiwan, whose fruits are very different; in some places it’s a serious invasive.

So which is this, growing out my the neighbor’s knotweed jungle and starting to overhang the Back 40? It’s got immature mulberries, so it’s either the red or white. Complicating matters is that there are many cultivars and hybrids of both red and white mulberries. But, since the leaves are rough on top, like sandpaper, I’ll put my tentative bet on red mulberry. White mulberry leaves are shiny and smooth.

A juvenile northern mocking bird was in the tree a few days ago. There will be no fruit left for us bipeds!
