Misterioso como pintor de paisajes volcánicos, utópico en su pensamiento y contradictorio como activista político –participó en el movimiento revolucionario mexicano y tuvo inclinaciones pro-nazis–, Gerardo Murillo (1875-1964) o Dr. Atl es un personaje complejo del arte moderno mexicano que seduce visualmente, confronta ideológicamente e intriga intelectualmente.

Consciente de las circunstancias verdaderas y míticas que inhiben la comprensión y el disfrute de la creación del artista, el coleccionista Andrés Blaisten diseñó conceptualmente una exposición que, al margen de las actividades de Atl como funcionario, escritor, mitómano, vulcanólogo, historiador o amante –durante varios años fue la pareja de Nahui Ollin–, se concentra en la dimensión estética de las imágenes. Un recurso narrativo eficaz, que transparenta esa vertiente espiritual y contemplativa que se relaciona, formalmente, con vocabularios romántico-místicos y postimpresionistas vinculados con pensamientos teosofistas.

Made of Mayan weaving techniques, Nahui Ollin uses candy and gum wrappers with soda bottle labels that have been rejected by factories or manufacturers to make brightly coloured bags, clutches and accessories. The wrappers have never been used and otherwise would have been sent to a landfill. Nahui Ollin has managed to find a use for these materials by transforming them into works of art!
