Nearing Miami, Volvo could be 'anyone's game'

With about 3,000 nautical miles and another week to go in leg 6 of the Volvo Ocean Race, hometown favorite PUMA Ocean Racing powered by BERG leads the five-boat pack heading to Miami — but not by much.

PUMA, which had enjoyed a comfortable lead since departing Itajai, Brazil, last Sunday, found itself within sight of runner-up CAMPER with Emirates Team New Zealand rounding Recife on the northeastern tip of Brazil on Saturday. Overall race leader Team Telefonica was only about three nautical miles behind CAMPER.

Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing trailed the leaders by about 20 miles, while last-place Groupama was more than 100 miles back from the fleet.

The lead pack is heading north into a zone of trade winds, and Abu Dhabi watch leader Rob Greenhalgh says the race is wide open.

“It’s anyone’s game except Groupama, who might lose out a bit more,” Greenhalgh said. “You couldn’t call it from here.”

According to Volvo Ocean Race trackers, the fleet is estimated to arrive in Miami on May 8.
