CU regents debate whether guns should be allowed in Boulder campus dorms

University of Colorado Regent Sue Sharkey, R-Windsor, said she doubts that the whistle her daughter and other students were given at orientation their freshman year on the Boulder campus would protect them from an attacker.

"I would much rather have her carrying a gun in her purse than a whistle," Sharkey said Thursday as the Board of Regents debated whether CU should ban guns in the dorms, football stadium and other campus locations.

At the heart of the issue is student safety, regents agreed. But some Republicans said students are safer if they are able to arm themselves against attackers, and Democrats said guns in the dorms are a safety hazard.

"In our dorms -- as much as we don't like to admit it -- students experiment with drugs, alcohol and sex," said Regent Stephen Ludwig, D-Denver. "And firearms in that mix is a horrifically bad idea."

In March, the Supreme Court ruled that CU cannot ban concealed-weapon permit holders from bringing their guns to the campus.
