First Person / Filling blank pages: How I learned to love keeping a journal

In the spring of 1993, I gave myself an enormous gift to mark my entry into the Half-A-Hundred Club. In those days, 50 was not the new 30, so the passage required a bit of easing into.

I decided to celebrate my benchmark birthday with a mini-version of my longtime dream of living on the ocean. After months of research, I found just the right place in Delaware: a 2-story condo at the quiet end of the Rehoboth Beach boardwalk. The off-season months of March and April were soothingly silent.

The seaside sabbatical exceeded my sky-high expectations. Each day, I gathered an abundance of gifts from the sea -- exquisite shells, glimmering sea glass, a tiny well-preserved seahorse (still cherished 19 years later). The most precious gift, however, turned out to be one I discovered when a fire alarm went off at 3 a.m. one night.

Startled awake, I jumped out of bed, mind churning: What should I grab?

I ran to the box of journals I'd brought, planning to re-read all 13 of them. I grabbed the box, threw my purse into it and was headed for my jewelry when the landlord's voice boomed, "False alarm, folks. Sorry."

My Crafty Crap: July: Key Keeper Coin Purse

I'll share more pictures of my Key Keeper & my full thoughts on the pattern next week. For now though I will tell you one thing, just in case you're thinking about getting started on it this weekend - I don't recommend adding the pocket that is in the pattern, unless you're going to add it to the outside. It won't act as much more than a divider, and personally, I don't think it makes much sense in a coin purse.
